Moving to a new city in India involves a long checklist. Among the most important-and most often procrastinated-tasks is transferring your LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) connection. Whether you use Indane Gas by Indian Oil, HP Gas by Hindustan Petroleum, or Bharat Gas by Bharat Petroleum, the process is governed by guidelines from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and has become significantly more streamlined with digital portals.

This guide is designed to be the only resource you need to complete your LPG transfer successfully, covering every scenario: same city, same distributor; same city, different distributor; different city; different state; and even switching between gas companies.

If you are still finalizing where to live, it is worth checking honest, building-level reviews of your new area first. know.place maps what residents actually say about a building, the rent, the society, and the infrastructure around it, so the place you transfer your gas connection to is one you have already vetted.

Part 1: Understanding the Three Types of Transfers

Before you do anything else, identify which of these three scenarios applies to you. The procedure, time, and effort differ significantly.

Type 1: Same City, Same Distributor (Address Update Only)

You are moving within the same locality and your new address still falls under the service area of your current distributor.

What you need to do: Simply submit a written address change request to your distributor along with your new address proof. Your DGCC booklet will be updated. You retain your cylinder, regulator, and consumer number.

Time: 1-2 working days. Fee: Nil. Surrender equipment? No.

Type 2: Same City, Different Distributor (TTV / e-CTA)

You are moving within the same city but to an area served by a different distributor of the same company.

What you need to do: Obtain a Transfer Termination Voucher (TTV) from your old distributor (Indane/Bharat Gas term) or an electronic Consumer Transfer Advice (e-CTA) from your HP Gas distributor. Take this document to the new distributor.

Time: 3-5 working days. Fee: Nominal (varies by distributor). Surrender equipment? No. You keep your cylinder and regulator.

Type 3: Different City or State (Full Surrender + Termination Voucher)

You are relocating to a new city or state entirely.

What you need to do: Surrender your empty cylinder and pressure regulator to your current distributor. You will receive a Termination Voucher (TV) and a full security deposit refund. Take the TV to a distributor in your new city to get a new connection.

Time: 7-14 working days after approaching the new distributor. Fee: You pay the standard new security deposit at the new location. Surrender equipment? Yes-mandatory.

Important Safety Note: It is illegal and dangerous to transport LPG cylinders (whether filled or empty) in personal vehicles, trucks, or moving vans. Always surrender them at your old distributor.

Part 2: Documents You Must Prepare

Regardless of your provider or scenario, this is the core document set you must prepare.

Documents for Initiating Transfer at the Old Distributor

DocumentDetails
Original Subscription Voucher (SV)The two-page document issued when you first received the connection. This is your most critical document.
Domestic Gas Consumer Card (DGCC Booklet)Your gas transaction passbook.
Identity ProofAadhaar card (preferred), PAN card, Passport, or Voter ID.
New Address ProofRental agreement, utility bill (not older than 3 months), company accommodation letter, or Aadhaar with new address.
Written Transfer Request LetterA signed letter stating your consumer number, current address, new destination address, and reason for transfer.
Empty Cylinder + RegulatorRequired only for inter-city / inter-state transfers (Type 3).

Documents for Completing Transfer at the New Distributor

DocumentDetails
Termination Voucher (TV) / TTV / e-CTAIssued by old distributor. Valid for 1 year (TV for inter-city) or 3 months (TTV/e-CTA for same-city).
Identity ProofAadhaar card.
New Address ProofRental agreement or utility bill at the new location.
Two passport-size photographs

If your Subscription Voucher is lost: Submit a notarized affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper along with your ID proof to your current distributor before requesting the transfer. Reinstatement is possible but adds 5-7 working days to the process.

Part 4: LPG Portability - Using the mylpg.in Portal

The mylpg.in portal, maintained by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas through PPAC (Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell), provides a unified platform for LPG portability. It allows you to change your distributor-and even your gas company-directly online.

Intra-company portability (e.g., switching from one Indane distributor to another Indane distributor) is free of charge. No additional security deposit is required.

How to Use mylpg.in for Changing Your Distributor (Intra-Company)

Step 1. Go to www.mylpg.in and select your company’s icon (IndianOil, HP Gas, or Bharat Gas).

Step 2. Register or log in using your 17-digit LPGI ID (LPG Consumer ID), registered mobile number, and OTP verification.

Step 3. On the Portability dashboard, you will see a list of distributors available in your cluster, along with their Star Ratings (based on delivery performance as rated by consumers). This helps you make an informed choice.

Step 4. Select your preferred new distributor and confirm.

Step 5. You will receive an email confirmation with your transfer details and the next steps. Take a printout of this email.

Step 6. Visit your newly chosen distributor with the confirmation email printout. They will update your records and complete the enrollment.

Inter-Company Portability (e.g., Switching from Indane to HP Gas)

As of 2026, the equipment (cylinder and pressure regulator) is not interchangeable between different oil marketing companies due to different valve specifications. Therefore:

  1. Visit your current company’s distributor and surrender your cylinder and regulator.
  2. Collect the refund of your security deposit and the relevant transfer documentation.
  3. Apply for a new connection with your chosen new company’s distributor.
  4. Pay the standard new-connection security deposit for the new equipment.

Future Development: The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) is working on an LPG Interoperability Framework (similar to Mobile Number Portability) to allow seamless switching between companies without equipment exchange. This framework is under development and not yet implemented. Source: PNGRB Public Notice

Part 5: Special Scenarios and Edge Cases

Scenario: Ownership Transfer to a Family Member

If the primary connection holder is deceased, or if you wish to transfer ownership to another family member (e.g., from parent to child):

  1. The current holder (or their legal heir) provides a written consent letter and a Death Certificate (if deceased).
  2. The new holder (transferee) completes a KYC Form and a Declaration Form at the distributor.
  3. Both parties provide identity and address proofs.
  4. The original security deposit may be refunded to the current holder, and the transferee pays a fresh deposit for a new SV in their name.

Scenario: Company/Employer Accommodation Transfer

If your LPG connection was linked to company-provided accommodation:

  1. Obtain an employer letter confirming your new residential address or confirming new accommodation.
  2. This document is accepted as a valid address proof for both Type 1 and Type 2 transfers.
  3. For Type 3 transfers, follow the standard inter-city process.

Scenario: Termination Voucher Has Expired

A TV is valid for 1 year from the date of issue. If it expires before you approach a new distributor:

  • Return to your previous city’s distributor (or contact them) to explain the circumstance. You may be required to submit a fresh affidavit.
  • In practice, most distributors will re-issue documentation if you can provide evidence of the delay (e.g., prolonged travel or hospitalization).

Scenario: eKYC Not Completed

Since 2019, the Government of India has mandated eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer) linking for all LPG consumers. If your eKYC is pending:

  • Complete it online via mylpg.in or your gas company’s app using your Aadhaar OTP.
  • eKYC must be completed before subsidy (PAHAL/DBT) can resume at the new address.

Part 6: PAHAL Subsidy and DBT Linkage

The PAHAL (Pratyaksh Hanstantarit Labh) scheme transfers LPG subsidies directly to consumers’ bank accounts (DBT). When you transfer your connection, ensure the following to avoid subsidy disruption:

  1. Link your Aadhaar to your new bank account at the new address.
  2. After the transfer is complete, update your bank account details in your gas company’s portal or at the new distributor.
  3. The PAHAL linkage typically migrates automatically within 1-2 billing cycles after the transfer, but manually verifying via the portal is recommended.

Official DBT/PAHAL information: https://www.mylpg.in (access the Pahal section after login).

Part 8: Essential Tips and Common Pitfalls

  • Safeguard Your Subscription Voucher (SV): This is non-replaceable without an affidavit. Store a scanned digital copy in your email or cloud storage.
  • Check Your Star Rating Before Choosing a New Distributor: The mylpg.in portability portal shows real-time distributor ratings. Choose a distributor with 3 stars or higher for reliable service.
  • Do Not Pay Unofficial “Agents”: Only use the official .in portals of IOCL, HPCL, or BPCL. Never pay third-party agents claiming to expedite the process-this is a common scam.
  • Ensure Subsidy Re-Linkage Promptly: After transferring, re-verify your PAHAL and bank linkage via your gas company’s app to avoid missed subsidy cycles.
  • Track Your Request Online: All three companies allow you to track the status of your transfer request through their online portals or apps. Use this to follow up effectively instead of making repeated distributor visits.
  • Online Request Stuck? Visit the Distributor in Person: If your online transfer request is taking longer than the expected timeline and there is no update, visit your target (new) distributor directly. Online requests often require the distributor to manually approve the transfer on their end-many distributors do not regularly log in to their portal dashboard. A brief in-person visit is usually enough to get them to action your pending request.
  • Don’t Transport Filled Cylinders: Never transport a filled LPG cylinder yourself. It is illegal under the Petroleum Act and can be dangerous.
